It is important to take care of your newly planted tree because…
- An improperly planted and cared for tree can result in tree death or destruction of property.
- Planting too shallow can result in an unstable tree.
- No watering deep enough can result in tree roots that damage concrete or pipes.
Examples in what to avoid in planting:
- Blocking vision at street corners
- Planting closer than 6 feet from underground utilities or pad-mounted transformers.
- Planting too close to sidewalks, streets or driveways
- Trees, shrubs, and other woody plants should not be planted within 10 feet of the base of a power pole.
For step-by-step instructions and resources, please see the Arbor Day Foundation website.
Trees should be placed in a location to provide fifty (50) percent shading of driveways or sidewalks within ten (10) years. Tree coverage shall be determined by the approximate crown diameter of each tree at ten (10) years.
Plants shall be maintained free from physical damage or injury arising from lack of water, chemical damage, insects and diseases. Plants showing such damage shall be replaced by the same or similar species.
Planting areas shall be kept free from weeds, debris and undesirable materials that may be detrimental to safety, drainage or appearance.
Tree placement shall take into account the location of approved signage, to promote enhanced views of signage without impacting parking lot and perimeter landscaping coverage.
Soil amendments shall be added as recommended by the soils reports and rototill to six (6) inches in depth.
Trees shall not be planted directly on top of any water or sewer lines. Dimensions shall be included on the plans to confirm that street trees are planted a minimum distance of 8 ft. from concrete and building foundations, and 10 ft. from water and sewer lines. Deep root barriers shall be provided abutting concrete or utility lines for all trees within eight (8) feet of pavement, or within ten (10) feet of sewer or water lines. Under no circumstance shall trees be closer than five (5) feet to sewer or water lines.
