State Adopts 10.0 ug/L MCL for Hexavalent Chromium

In April of 2024, the State of California adopted new MCL for Hexavalent Chromium of 10 parts per billion (ppb), with a regulation effective date of October 1, 2024.  In compliance with the new regulation, Water Systems the size of Vacaville will have 2 years to get into compliance and meet the new MCL with all water sources, making October 1, 2026, our new compliance date.

Prior to October 1, 2024, hexavalent chromium had been regulated under the total chromium MCL of 50 ppb. California's total chromium MCL was established in 1977 with the adoption of a "National Interim Drinking Water Standard" for chromium to address exposures to hexavalent chromium, the more toxic form of chromium. The U.S. EPA adopted the same 50 ppb MCL for total chromium, but in 1991 raised that federal MCL to 100 ppb. California did not follow U.S. EPA's change and still has a total chromium MCL of 50 ppb. The total chromium MCL will continue to exist as an enforceable standard.
