The Vacaville Police Department has valued the assistance of volunteers for decades; records indicate as far back as 1980.  For many years volunteers have played a valuable part in data entry, clerical assistance, the intervention of elder abuse, identifying stolen property, tracking crime statistics, and enforcing parking regulations. There are currently 60 Volunteers In Police Service (VIPS) who serve the community by providing services that allow police staff to focus their attention on other critical areas of law enforcement.

In 2007, the department was the recipient of an International Association of Chiefs of Police/Science Applications International Corporation (IACP/SAIC) Award for Outstanding Achievement in Law Enforcement Volunteer Programs.

• Senior wellness and vacation house checks
• Graffiti abatement
• Park and bike path patrols
• Court courier services
• Department tours
• Community ambassadors

• Assist at community events (kids fest, national night out, creekwalk, merriment on main & more!)

• Applicants must be at least 18 years old
• Reside in the city of Vacaville
• Complete an application and personal history statement (phs)
• Pass an interview and comprehensive background check which includes police and reference checks
• All VIPS are required to complete an initial training program.
• If selected to a team that requires the use of a city vehicle, you must have a good driving record

• The goal is a minimum of sixteen hours per month – or 4 hours per week.
• We ask all volunteers to commit at least one year to the program upon hire.
• Most assignments are daytime hours, monday - friday
• Occasionally, there are assignments that can be completed at night or on weekends

• Volunteers receive on-the-job training for their individual assignments. 
• If the assignment calls for the use of department vehicles, VIPS are required to attend yearly driver training.

Process:

1. Application Screening- Review of submitted application to determine initial eligibility.
2. Interview - Initial Interview with selected candidates.
3. Personal History Statement - Candidates complete a detailed personal history form.  (Note:  A second interview may be required.) 
4. Suitability Determination - Evaluation of the candidate's background and qualificaitions.
5. Final Placement - Successful candidates are placed into available volunteer assignments.
